The Dee-Lite Foundation was founded by Henry Shaw, in loving memory of Denise Shaw.

The idea of providing scholarships came about gradually, through casual conversations between Fred Whitfield and Henry Shaw. The two men became friends through their mutual association with the Charlotte Hornets. At first, Whitfield and Shaw discussed helping send youth to college. Then Whitfield suggested they help the youth earlier by giving them access to a great education that would then help them get into college.
